Let's talk about systemic racism

June 4, 2020

Dear neighbors,

The murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officers is a painful reminder of how far we have to go to create a more fair and just society for everyone. This tragedy has exposed the enduring pain felt by so many people in the United States, including here in Lancaster County.

It is time that we join the national conversation about how we can end systemic racism in society, and specifically in law enforcement.

In Manheim Township, I am proud of our professional and well-trained police department and our officers who display a commitment to keeping us safe every day.

Yet, we always have a responsibility to learn from others’ experiences and to improve so that all members of our community, regardless of race, have confidence that they can count on the police. The issues facing American law enforcement are bigger than any one police officer or police department.

As a Commissioner, my job is to enact policies that improve people’s lives. I have been researching policing best practices since I was first elected, including the Task Force on 21st Century Policing report. The process of change, however, must start by bringing police officers, the public, and elected officials together for a conversation.

That’s why I want to hear from you. Please email me to share your thoughts at Tom@OBrienforMT.com. This is just a starting point, and I will keep fighting to address the issue.

Thank you,

Tom
