O'Brien calls on local members of Congress to end shutdown
Manheim Township Commissioner Tom O'Brien sent a letter to local members of Congress Monday asking them to end the partial federal government shutdown.
O'Brien told Rep. Lloyd Smucker, Sen. Bob Casey, and Sen. Pat Toomey that federal workers and services must not be held hostage in a political negotiation over funding for a border wall.
"Public servants and the services upon which our residents depend are being used as pawns in a political debate that has nothing to do with them," O'Brien wrote. "Spirited debate is a good thing in our democracy, but functioning government should never be used as political leverage."
O'Brien said residents feared that IRS services, SNAP benefits, and other programs could be disrupted. He urged the members to end the shutdown.
