O'Brien, Mecum vote against controversial Vacancy Board appointment
Commissioners Tom O'Brien and Sam Mecum voted Tuesday against the appointment of controversial nominee John Shipman to the Manheim Township Vacancy Board.
The Vacancy Board is comprised of one person who must choose a replacement if a vacancy occurs on the Board of Commissioners and the remaining Commissioners cannot agree on a candidate.
O'Brien said he fears Shipman, who currently serves as Treasurer for the Manheim Township Republican Committee, is too partisan for a position that should be non-partisan.
"If the event arises, the Vacancy Board member should evaluate candidates based on qualifications, not party loyalty," O'Brien said after the vote. "This position is too important to be given away as a political favor."
Shipman was confirmed by a 3-2 vote after the Board's three other members voted in favor of his appointment.
O'Brien said that despite the vote, he remains hopeful the Board will prioritize community over party going forward.
